Cultivating Sustainability in Museums’ Digital Renaissance

Institutions dedicated to the preservation and safeguarding of our cultural heritage, such as museums, serve as invaluable assets for the enhancement of mental health, overall well-being, social cohesion, and cultural enlightenment within our society. The intrinsic value of culture for the betterment of our communities has never been more evident than in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. During this global crisis, those fortunate enough to have access to the internet have increasingly turned to online cultural offerings provided by both public and private museums.

The Edupreneurs launch event

The Project Edupreneurs: Networking and Empowering Education Enterpreneurs towards a resilient edtech ecosystem in Southern Africa, funded by the Southern Africa Innovation Support (SAIS) 2, was successfully launched on 31st March 2021. The project is developed by the consortium between Eduix, Glowdom and the Namibian Business Innovation Institution (NBII). Over 120 participants from Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and Finland registered to the event and will be contacted for further developments.

The event counted on the participation of brilliant keynote speakers and panelists in the morning and afternoon. The event finished with the needs assessment workshop, in which we gathered personal and professional experiences of the stakeholders regarding their challenges and expectations for building a resilient education business ecosystem in the Southern Africa region.

Project stakeholders will benefit from engaging in the project

… by getting opportunities to network with relevant education business organizations and promote their services and products, as well as by receiving capacity building on business innovation and digital transformation. On the other hand, the stakeholders have the crucial role of providing us relevant information about their needs and challenges for thriving in critical situations, so we can tailor the project outcomes to their specific situation.

Helping to implement Flipped Classroom at a Finnish University

In 2019, I was responsible to design a self-study course and its materials about Flipped Classroom targeted to the international staff of the University of Eastern Finland. That was one of the most important professional learning experiences I’ve had over here. I didn’t know much about this pedagogical approach. I have attended a course whose teacher used the Flipped Classroom methodology. The course was about Quantitative Methods in research and it was, indeed, a very productive learning experience. However, beyond that punctual experience, I did not know much.

When I got the task to design a course and its materials about Flipped Classroom to the international staff of the University, I got excited about how much I had to learn and apply it. And it was just an amazing experience of learning not only about a pedagogical method, but also about institutional curriculum reform, mindset transformation, and pedagogical change.

Eduditra, exciting times

There have been situations in history, where individuals or a society has had an opportunity, but there has not been the right momentum. So, the opportunity has been wasted, and the next chance has come much later to someone else. For example, in ancient Alexandra in Roman Egypt, mathematician and engineer Hero developed Aeolipile, a wildly rotating steam ball, which can be considered as the first known radial steam turbine. However, he, or no one else at the time, did not find any practical use for it; it was taken only as a gimmick or a trick for temples. It took over 1700 years for the next opportunity and momentum to come into Great Britannia and James Watt. They seized an opportunity, there was the momentum, and the rest is history. But think if they didn’t, if the momentum has tailed off, what would our world look like today?

Looking back, so we know where to move forward

Despite all challenges and tragedies, some dare to say that the future came earlier during 2020. This “future” is complex, it scares us when we realize that education inequality has increased even more when it was already unacceptable, and school closure set back successes achieved through hard years of effort and investment. However, this same future brings hope when we have witnessed how education stakeholders have moved innovation from the margins to the center of many education systems to overcome the challenges imposed by the lockdown and social isolation.

In the report “Beyond reopening schools: how education can emerge stronger than before Covid-19”, Emiliana Vegas and Rebecca Winthrop propose five actions to guide transformation of education systems:

  1. Leverage public schools, given their essential role in equalizing opportunity across dimensions within society;
  2. Emphasize the instructional core of teaching and learning;
  3. Deploy education technology to power up schools in a long-term manner and for the core benefits of teaching and learning;
  4. Forge stronger and more trusting relationships between parents and teachers;
  5. And implement an iterative approach of understanding the evidence and setting the course of change accordingly.
